“Police discovered more than 80 bodies in and around Baghdad Tuesday, many of them bearing the marks of torture and execution.
Authorities took the killings to be a continuation
of the sectarian violence that has shaken the country since the Feb. 22 bombing of a revered Shiite Muslim shrine in the city of Samarra. The carnage came as Iraqi politicians began what they said would be daily meetings among all of the main political parties to form a national unity government. The country's new parliament, elected in December, is scheduled to convene Thursday. . .
when a reporter at a news conference asked why the government was not doing more about families who were fleeing their homes because of possible sectarian attacks, Sadr was dismissive. ‘What government? Everyone is busy about who would be president, prime minister or minister. The people are forgotten.’”
