We need to remember

Never Again (by Duane Shank)

Today is the commemoration of Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Memorial Day)in the modern Jewish calendar. The date was originally enacted by the Israeli Parliament in 1953, but has now become a commemoration by the international Jewish community and friends.

It is a day to commemorate the more than 6 million Jews killed by the Nazis from 1938-1945. It is a day to reflect on the fact that when the rest of the world knew what was happening, too little was done to stop it. And, it is a day to reflect on contemporary genocides, such as Darfur, and redouble our efforts to ensure that "never again" becomes a reality.

Shank is a contributor to Jim Wallis' God's Politics blog. He reminds us to remember...

When I was a young thing, I used to work for a great Jewish Family. They had a thriving, diversified, business that spanned over 3 states. The business was run by brothers, brothers-in-laws....and we were blessed with a man by the name of Mr. Siegel. When he would visit our facility he would sit with you and talk with you like you were just his buddy (even though he was worth millions and you would never know it, except for maybe that big ROCK on Mrs. Siegels hand). Very down to earth and personallable and took care of us like his family. I only remember one time of him ever speaking of him escaping the gas chamber and how some of his wife's family did not (they were just children at the time). It was a tabu subject and was not talked about. He was a very giving man and I still think he is alive to this day and think of him often. I will think of him and his loved ones today and thank you for reminding me of him on this day, Abuelita!
