Happy Buddha's Birthday

Please help me. Last night, in my eagerness to please the Zen masters, I volunteered to bring a cake for Buddha’s birthday party.

Now, I was told that there is no particular protocol for making or serving the cake and that any cake would do. But, I want the Zen masters to be so impressed that they will overlook all my mindless comments and general ignorance. Also, I am hoping that following all rules will quickly lead to enlightenment. So, I began researching Buddha’s birthday to find the appropriate cake.

Thus far, I have found some recipes for rice cake (jjinddeok) and flower cake (hwajeon) but I don’t know what half of the ingredients are and, the whole process seems so complicated -- compared to the perfectly presentable cakes that I already know how to make. I’m thinking of contacting this top rated Korean restaurant in Seattle to see if they will make a “perfect” cake.

But; perhaps this makes it seem that I have too much thinking mind. And, if I ask for help with this cake question the answer might be “What a fool you are” “You have the greatest treasure in the world within you and you go around asking other people for help”.

So, I am left, sitting cakeless and confused. Do you have a suggestion for the path that I should take?

Didn't your mama tell you to never volunteer? If you screw this up, they'll hit you with a stick 30 times and then throw you out of the shrine. Your only hope is to make two cakes & send one to me. I'll tell you whether it will pass. If it is unacceptable, we will repeat it until you have it right.

Patti:
Just bake a cake.

Virg:
Perhaps you should review the 2nd & 4th precepts.
