When the Scots-Irish came to America, they were predominately Presbyterian. Presbyterians required educated clergy. Since educated folk were largely unavailable in the back woods, the Scots-Irish became Baptists and Methodists who had no requirement. Methodists, have have evolved into a relative enlightened group.
