Cindy McCain: Palin knows foreign policy because "Alaska is the closest part of our continent to Russia."

"STEPHANOPOULOS: But she has no national security experience.
McCAIN: You know, the experience that she comes from is what she's done in government, and remember, Alaska is the closest part of our continent to Russia. It's not as if she doesn't understand what's at stake here.
It doesn't appear that Palin has ever even traveled to Russia, despite her state's proximity. In fact, she didn't even have a passport until 2007, when she visited troops stationed in Kuwait and Germany. She has also visited Ireland."
Well, she didn't exactly visit Ireland, but she did stop there for refueling. Palin’s Ireland trip was just a refueling stopover. "Last week, Politico’s Ben Smith asked the McCain campaign if Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) — who was first issued a U.S. passport in 2007 — had ever traveled abroad. A spokeswoman for Palin said the Alaska governor had been to Germany and Kuwait in 2007 and had visited one other country, Ireland. It turns out that the Ireland trip was just a refueling stopover on the way to Europe and the Middle East. But she has been to Canada, another campaign spokesman noted. (HT: AmericaBlog)"

It doesn't take a whole hell of a lot of intelligence or insight to inherit a beer distributorship.

Cindy didn't explain it the best, but Sarah Palin as governor of Alaska is regularly briefed on matters of national security and homeland security because of Alaska's geographic juxtaposition to Russia, just a few miles across the Bering Strait. Many military and intel assets are sited in Alaska. Obviously, because of the sensitive nature of this info, the exact nature of her briefings cannot be known, but she is more informed on these matters than governors of other states.
