Mythology is always a distructive antidote to reason. Heston personified the myth that the gun was a fundamental element in America's foundational culture and and emblematic to individual freedom. This myth being a product of hollywood and earlier forms of entertainment it was fitting that Heston would have been consumed by it.

Perhaps it is an occupational hazard for an actor to be unable to seperate reality from make believe. His role in perpetuating the gun culture myth with all it destructive implications is a large debit on the balance sheet of his life.
