Ozark's Bois D'Arc

We called um Bodark. The Swearingens said that local tribes made their bows out of them. I knew even then that if a Swearingen says it, you can take it to the bank. The Osage and even Comanches used it. Some call the tree and the fruit the Osage Orange, Others say Horse Apple, Hedge Apple, or Maclura pomifera. There's a theory that the name Ozark came from it-Either Bois D'Ark (Wood of the Bow) or Aux Arc (of, to, or from the bow). Yes ma'am, this place was overrun by French before we started calling um Freedoms. See, also Tom Beveridge's Ozarks Chap. 1.
