When the Scots-Irish came to America, they were predominately Presbyterian. Presbyterians required educated clergy. Since educated folk were largely unavailable in the back woods, the Scots-Irish became Baptists and Methodists who had no requirement. Methodists, have have evolved into a relative enlightened group. Some Baptists have too, but there weren’t enough of them at the Arkansas Baptist Convention.
“Those Baptist want to make it illegal to do a lot of things, but assuming this position allows them to stand firm against gays and fornicators. They declared that orphans and unwanted children should be warehoused in state institutions at taxpayer expense unless potential adoptive or foster parents meet their standards, . . .Never mind that there are 3,700 Arkansas children needing foster care and only about 1,100 foster homes are ready to take them. Better that they rot in bedlam than be placed in a loving home with qualified adults who don't conform to the lifestyles of the priggish Arkansas Baptist Convention. These pious meddlers have no better solution, but they are damn sure against sexually active unmarried couples, gay or straight, adopting children or providing foster homes. If you haven't already done so, Vote Against Act 1.” Baptist Convention Casts First Stone by Jonah.

Bush-McCain Redistribution of Wealth.
"Joe the plumber really should look at the reports from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. Republicans redistributed the nation's wealth from the incomes of the bottom 90 percent of households to the incomes of the top 1% of households. Now that's wealth redistribution. So, Joe, unless you're in that top 1% income household, a vote for McCain is a vote against yourself." Speaking of Wealth Redistribution -- "Income Concentration at Highest Level Since 1928" by Patti

Obama Supporter Attacked.
An Obama campaign volunteer pictured here was beaten by a white woman after she became enraged over the Obama sticker on his car. The man says he was robbed at an ATM Wednesday night after leaving a Democratic Party phone bank. He said the robber, whom he described only as a white woman wearing designer clothes and having a Fargo accent, held a knife to his neck, stole $60 from him and then punched and kicked him. Before she fled, he said she carved a moose on his butt.

I Knew the Mavericks. The Mavericks Were Friends of Mine, and You, John McCain, and You Sarah Palin Are No Mavericks.
Sarah Palin and John McCain may describe themselves as mavericks, but real Mavericks know better. . . “to those who know the history of the word, applying it to Mr. McCain is a bit of a stretch - and to one Texas family in particular it is even a bit offensive. ‘I'm just enraged that McCain calls himself a maverick,’ said Terrellita Maverick, 82, a San Antonio native who proudly carries the name of a family that has been known for its progressive politics since the 1600s, when an early ancestor in Boston got into trouble with the law over his agitation for the rights of indentured servants. In the 1800s, Samuel Augustus Maverick (pictured here) went to Texas and became known for not branding his cattle. He was more interested in keeping track of the land he owned than the livestock on it, Ms. Maverick said; unbranded cattle, then, were called "Maverick's." The name came to mean anyone who didn't bear another's brand. Sam Maverick's grandson, Fontaine Maury Maverick, was a two-term congressman and a mayor of San Antonio who lost his mayoral re-election bid when conservatives labeled him a Communist. He served in the Roosevelt administration on the Smaller War Plants Corporation and is best known for another coinage. He came up with the term "gobbledygook" in frustration at the convoluted language of bureaucrats. This Maverick's son, Maury Jr., was a firebrand civil libertarian and lawyer who defended draft resisters, atheists and others scorned by society. He served in the Texas Legislature during the McCarthy era and wrote fiery columns for The San Antonio Express-News. His final column, published on Feb. 2, 2003, just after he died at 82, was an attack on the coming war in Iraq. Terrellita Maverick, sister of Maury Jr., is a member emeritus of the board of the San Antonio chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas. Considering the family's long history of association with liberalism and progressive ideals, it should come as no surprise that Ms. Maverick insists that John McCain, who has voted so often with his party, ‘is in no way a maverick, in uppercase or lowercase.’ "It's just incredible - the nerve! - to suggest that he's not part of that Republican herd. Every time we hear it, all my children and I and all my family shrink a little and say, `Oh, my God, he said it again.' ‘ ‘He's a Republican,’ she said. ‘He's branded.’" from Who You Callin’ a Maverick? Yet Another Reason To Vote for Rebekah Kennedy
"'You don't have to pass an IQ test to be in the Senate.'--Senator Mark Pryor, Religulous, quoted in The Morning News" Self-Evident Quote of the Day from Jonah
What If McCain & Obama Switched Credentials?
What if John McCain were a former president of the Harvard Law Review? What if Barack Obama finished fifth from the bottom of his graduating class? What if McCain were still married to the first woman he said "I do" to? What if Obama were the candidate who left his first wife after she no longer measured up to his standards?
What if Michelle Obama were a wife who not only became addicted to pain killers, but acquired them illegally through her charitable organization? What if Cindy McCain graduated from Harvard? What if Obama were a member of the "Keating 5"? What if McCain was a charismatic, eloquent speaker?
If these questions reflected reality, do you really believe the election numbers would be as close as they are?
This is what racism does. It covers up, rationalizes and minimizes positive qualities in one candidate and emphasizes negative qualities in another when there is a color difference.

On This Day In 1936 Claudie Hallie Rose Prim & Virgil Greer Lingle Eloped.
They kept it secret and she continued to live in the "girls" dorm and he in the "boys" dorm at Arkansas Tech for the rest of the school year. Only Claudie's sister Helen knew. "Boys" had to be 21 to marry without parental consent which they didn't have and he was only 18, so it wasn't exactly legal. His kids never cared what this made them technically and didn't mind being called same. Greer and Claudie stuck together for 62 years. They were about half way along when these pictures were taken.
On This Day In 1967 Thurgood Marshall Became the First African-American Justice of United States Supreme Court.
